Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
