Three police officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 others got wounded in a seemingly deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.

The detonation took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the house close to Verona to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were arrested at the location and one more individual who fled following the incident was located shortly later. All three have been admitted to medical facility.

The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the location showed the structure left as a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that attempts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.

Financial Context

The head of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, stated the property was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the siblings.

Mediators had been assigned to talk with the siblings who had locked themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings set off the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander the police commander told news outlets.

A gas canister had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the residence, the interior minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the explosion comprised eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor thought the detonation had occurred on a story above the doorway and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the propane tanks being opened”.

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the trio of personnel who had died in the service of their country.
