People have gathered around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.

The assault led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel reacted by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our aggressive opponents have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again create a danger to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled official remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed across the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the terms of the plan.

A senior delegate knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at evening in Egypt.

The official explained the morning session concluded without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the agreement.

He commented that the discussions are "tough and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are striving to narrow the gaps between the both parties.

Essential Points in Talks

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The swap of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for relief supplies distribution
  • Future governance of the territory

Citizen Reaction

In the city's memorial area that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member survived the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until every captive come back no one will feel safe."

"Once we see all home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.

Near the prime minister's home in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.

Protester one woman remarked: "We need do every compromise required for the hostages to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about seventy percent of the population want the war to end in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.

Gaza Conditions

At the location of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to honor the dead.

From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli bombardment carried on.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, area and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"Once the evening falls, the dread arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.

"My family are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, especially my youngest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will resume to us."

Humanitarian Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had received the bodies of six people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported another two fatalities had been transported. A person was died by Israeli troops while attempting to get help to the south region, medics stated.
