'Living a Nightmare': Loved Ones of Missing Young People Await Answers After Alpine Inferno
The loved ones of teenagers missing after a tragic inferno at a bar in a Swiss ski resort are enduring an painful wait for answers and appealing for any details about their children online.
The inferno devastated the a popular bar in the alpine resort, located in the mountains of the Valais region, in the middle of the night of January 1st. Circulated footage depict the ceiling being engulfed in flames as beverages with sparklers are held aloft.
Officials have warned that it could take days if not weeks to formally name the fatalities of the fire, which claimed the lives of four dozen individuals and hurt another over a hundred. Authorities stated on the latest update that the majority of the injured have been identified, with the process still underway to identify the other six.
In the interim, loved ones have been posting on online platforms to appeal for clues about their loved ones who were present at the venue that fateful night.
Appeals for the Unaccounted For
The fate of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, 16, are currently unknown, according to an heartfelt request from his parent.
The resident of Lutry near the city, explained to a publication that she had gone back to Lausanne to see if he was in the medical facility, while his father did the same in Bern, but could not find him.
"This is a living nightmare, a nightmare. Either I find my son in the morgue, or I find him in a serious state. Words cannot describe it," she said.
She continued that some of his companions had been located with burns covering a significant portion of their bodies. "It's unspeakable; they went through a terrifying ordeal."
The Italian government has said that six of its young people remain missing.
Among them is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage promising athlete, who hailed from Genoa but now living in the UAE.
The national sporting body has released a tribute that he is deceased, without directly referencing the fire, paying tribute to a "talented young man who embodied dedication and true sportsmanship."
His parent, is quoted as saying that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around the new year. An official spokesperson has indicated that a official announcement of his death is awaited.
Other Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is also among the missing. His mother told reporters that he had been on holiday but had ventured out with a group and ended up at the bar.
"A companion told me they escaped after the fire broke out and that he had his phone with him, but then at a specific moment he lost sight of him," she explained, adding he had been wearing a identifiable gold chain.
One of his educators said, "I've always been struck by his kindness and smile, alongside great maturity. Every time offer to help out."
Alice Kallergis, who holds dual Greek and Swiss nationality but lives permanently in Switzerland, was also present on New Year's Eve, according to reports.
Her brother has posted an urgent request online, saying the family has had "no news" regarding the teenager or the group she was with, who are also unaccounted for.
Officials from her country of origin say they are actively engaged with the situation.
