Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using these treatments need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
