Senegal's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

As I walk into the room, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after our chat. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and natural ability convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult person to convince was not a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

However, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning home,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and European Arrival

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his family encourage to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb skills. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, having been shown red early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. He is frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the main Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the game.
