Texas Top Legal Officer Files Lawsuit Against Tylenol Manufacturers Concerning Autism Assertions

Legal Action
The Texas Attorney General, a Trump ally who is running for US Senate, alleged the drug companies of withholding the risks of acetaminophen

Texas Attorney General Paxton is filing a lawsuit against the makers of acetaminophen, alleging the corporations hid potential risks that the medication presented to pediatric cognitive development.

This legal action arrives thirty days after Former President Trump advocated an unverified association between using acetaminophen - alternatively called paracetamol - during pregnancy and autism spectrum disorder in offspring.

The attorney general is filing suit against J&J, which previously sold the medication, the sole analgesic approved for expectant mothers, and Kenvue, which now manufacturers it.

In a statement, he stated they "misled consumers by gaining financially from discomfort and marketing drugs ignoring the potential hazards."

The manufacturer says there is no credible evidence linking acetaminophen to autism.

"These manufacturers deceived for years, knowingly endangering numerous people to increase profits," Paxton, a Republican, stated.

The company stated officially that it was "deeply concerned by the spread of false claims on the reliability of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the welfare of US mothers and children."

On its website, the company also mentioned it had "consistently assessed the relevant science and there is no credible data that shows a verified association between taking paracetamol and autism."

Associations representing doctors and medical practitioners share this view.

ACOG has said acetaminophen - the key substance in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for women during pregnancy to address discomfort and elevated temperature, which can create significant medical dangers if not addressed.

"In more than two decades of investigation on the utilization of paracetamol in gestation, not a single reputable study has definitively established that the consumption of paracetamol in any stage of gestation results in neurodevelopmental disorders in young ones," the association stated.

The court filing cites current declarations from the previous government in arguing the drug is potentially dangerous.

In recent weeks, Trump generated worry from health experts when he advised expectant mothers to "fight like hell" not to consume Tylenol when unwell.

The FDA then released a statement that doctors should consider limiting the usage of acetaminophen, while also stating that "a direct connection" between the medication and autism spectrum disorder in children has not been established.

The Health Department head Robert F Kennedy Jr, who supervises the Food and Drug Administration, had pledged in spring to initiate "a massive testing and research effort" that would determine the cause of autism in a limited time.

But experts warned that discovering a single cause of autism spectrum disorder - believed by scientists to be the outcome of a complicated interplay of inherited and external influences - would be difficult.

Autism is a form of lifelong neurodivergence and disability that impacts how persons experience and interact with the environment, and is diagnosed using physician assessments.

In his court filing, Paxton - a Trump ally who is campaigning for the Senate - asserts the manufacturer and Johnson & Johnson "willfully ignored and attempted to silence the science" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

The case aims to force the corporations "remove any commercial messaging" that claims acetaminophen is reliable for pregnant women.

This legal action echoes the complaints of a assembly of parents of children with autism and ADHD who took legal action against the producers of Tylenol in recently.

A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit, saying studies from the parents' expert witnesses was not conclusive.
