The Hamilton Island Resort, a Iconic Queensland Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Private Equity Firm.
An iconic resort island located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment saying they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is developed, including a significant range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
The resort is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.

The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
