Two Separate Cuba-Headed Relief Vessels Declared Lost following Leaving Mexico.
A large-scale search and rescue effort is actively ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of missing sailing vessels loaded with relief goods traveling from Mexico to Havana.
Maritime Search and Rescue Missions Initiated
The Mexican government has dispatched naval teams and military search aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were carrying a minimum of nine sailors, per a military release.
The ships had been projected to arrive in the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their arrival, the statement clarified.
Background of Relief to the Island
The island nation has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation struggles through widespread power outages across the country.
"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and both vessels are outfitted with appropriate safety equipment and communication devices," an official involved in the effort stated.
The nine-person crew are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.
"We are collaborating completely with the authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.
Earlier Relief Mission
Previously that week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and warmly received another boat that had carried 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the nation.
That boat, nicknamed "a new Granma" after the vessel in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, carried solar panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bicycles and food.
Wider Political Backdrop
Charity groups and individuals have primarily led initiatives to deliver essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the island nation was initiated.
International organizations have since highlighted ""severe" supply shortages, with more than 50,000 surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba amid energy rationing.
Foreign policy pressure have been ramped up in recent months, with remarks from several leaders underscoring the complicated state of relations.
Reacting to previous statements, a high-ranking government figure insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Indications suggest that early stages of discussions were initiated, although their present status remains uncertain.
The naval forces affirmed it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to find the vessels and secure the safety of the crews.
To date, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
