Why Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Confidence' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven matches for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage creates club a historic moment in a key Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He signed for Real from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during pre-season.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing football, every day you go to train and every day you play a match," said Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.

"He will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the team pursue trophies to come.

Following his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I have to earn my playing time on the pitch," he said following the win at Manchester.
